One homeless dog in Texas has overcome enough odds to give anyone that goes through hard times hope for a better future.
When Milly was discovered by rescuers she was in a Texas shelter fighting for her life. She had a broken leg, missing eye, damaged jaw, and was found to be heartworm positive. And if that wasn’t enough, she was also pregnant.

Stacey Silverstein, the co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock of NYC helped get Milly out of the shelter she was in, to a place that could give her medical care. Silverstein explains,
“Her past is terrible — she was completely abused. She sat rotting in a shelter for two weeks, and we couldn’t even get her out. When we finally did, she was just in terrible, terrible shape.”

Because of the extent of Milly’s injuries and the fact that she was pregnant, Silverstein arranged for her to transfer to Montgomery Animal Hospital in Maryland.

“She was so close to death when she got here,” Sharon Hall, officer manager at Montgomery Animal Hospital explained, “She was in critical condition.”
Despite her condition, Milly managed to make it through labor and give birth to 10 puppies. Sadly though, even with the best medical care, all of her puppies died shortly after birth. Now dealing with the emotional devastation of losing her litter, Milly never gave up her fight for life. She also never stopped trusting humans.

Milly Never Stopped Trusting Humans
“She is such a love, and how she trusts humans is just amazing … because she shouldn’t trust us,” Hall said. “She should hate us all, honestly, because somebody has done all of this to her.”
Hall has taken it upon herself to give special attention to Milly through this trial she is going through. “I hold her a lot,” Hall said. “She’s only 25 pounds, so she’s just a little peanut. She just wants to be close, so I just hold her on my lap while I work on my computer.”
“I actually share an office with my boss, who is the doctor, and he took this picture that I put on Facebook,” Hall explained. “I wrote that I actually got caught not working because I was holding her. He wrote below it that he actually wasn’t working either because he’s the one who took the picture.”
She Just Wants To Be Close. She Wants To Be Loved
This is the kind of love and compassion that helped Milly survive and beat all odds. “We’re mesmerized by her, and we are amazed by her strength and by her love and her will to live,” Hall said. “She’s the sweetest little thing. She wants to be with people, she wants to be loved, she wants to be close — and she’s totally happy with just that.”
Milly will need several more surgeries before she is ready to be put up for adoption. But when that time comes, Milly will be sure to make someone a great companion. “She loves everybody equally, and I really just think she’s going to make a spectacular pet for somebody,” Hall said.
“This is an amazing story — that this dog has overcome all these obstacles,” Silverstein said. “It’s just amazing that she’s alive. Obviously, we feel terrible for her pregnancy and that she lost all of her babies, but we’re thankful that she’s alive, and we just hope for the best going forward.”
