Sometimes homeless dogs just need a little exposure to find the right home. Mickey had been overlooked at the Nebraska Humane Society for 4 months. When the La Vista Police Department decided to team up with the shelter, Mickey was the first dog chosen to participate.
Pam Wiese, a spokesperson for the Nebraska Humane Society explains, “We love this partnership. The dogs are more relaxed, and they are able to showcase their personalities as they interact in a more normal, natural way.”
Captain Bryan D. Waugh was the one who thought up the idea for the program. “Any agency looking for a great community policing opportunity would benefit from the program, while strengthening the relationship with their partners at local animal shelters or rescues,” he said.
When Mickey’s big day arrived, he was picked up by an officer and then traveled to the station to get his police patch for the day. Mickey proudly wore the patch on his collar as he happily stuck his head out the police cruiser.
The day was a success for both Mickey and the program
“It was obvious our first dog Mickey had a great day,” Waugh says.
Mickey’s First Day Gets Even Better
But something even better was about to happen for Mickey. After the event was publicized on the radio, newspapers and tv stations, a woman came forward who wanted to adopt Mickey. Shannon Andresen saw Mickey in the media and said to her boyfriend Tyler Nelson, “Tyler, get me that dog and you’ll make me the happiest girl in the world,” Andresen recalls.
Andresen and Nelson went to the shelter on Saturday to meet and play with Mickey. By Sunday the adoption papers were complete and they took Mickey home. He has been living with them ever since. “He is absolutely perfect,” Andresen proudly exclaims.
This is one partnership that both the police department and shelter are happy to continue. “We were thrilled that Mickey’s exposure got him a new home and the right home too!” Wiese said. “That is really what our mission is, finding a good home for every pet.”
The police department and shelter plan on teaming up once a month. Hopefully, more dogs will get the exposure that they need to find a loving home the way that Mickey did.
We think this is a great idea, do you agree? Share with another animal lover!
