Depressed Dog At Shelter Deeply Mourns The Family He Loved For Six Years

We have all seen the commercials for the ASPCA on television with depressed animals. Heck, I can’t even bear to watch those, personally. Well, the guy you are about to meet has them beat. His video went viral and he broke hearts around the globe. There is a late-breaking update to this heart-wrenching story, though. Let’s dig in; I want you to meet Hunter.

HUNTER

Of course, after six years with what he thought was his forever family, Hunter thought things would stay that way. After all, he loved them every day with all his heart. What more could they want?

Sadly, this is yet another dog abandoned at the Houston Human Society — we have certainly talked about that area before. The six-year-old Australian Shepherd mix was dropped at the shelter by his owners. You see, Hunter’s old family got a new puppy, and when Hunter didn’t get along with it right away, they dumped him.

Of course, Hunter is a dog, and the only thing he knew was that suddenly, he was entirely alone in a cage.

Randi Bertholet has been a volunteer at the shelter for the past seven years. She was one of the first humans to interact with Hunter after his life fell apart.

HE TRIED TO DISAPPEAR

At first, when Randi approached Hunter’s cage, he had slunk into the corner and collapsed. She said it looked like he was trying to disappear.

She entered the cage and just sat there with Hunter until he realized he could trust her. It was then that the poor boy broke down entirely.

In the photo you can see that Hunter was so depressed he couldn’t even hold his head up anymore. As soon as someone showed him kindness, his head sunk into her chest and he just stayed that way — he was so depressed, he was weak.

The video she took, though, it went viral. Check it out:

Hunter has a forever family! We posted a video so you all can meet them! https://www.facebook.com/78299858970/posts/10156450752778971/UPDATE: Thank you so much to everyone for sharing Hunter’s story. At this time, we have a few wonderful applications in for him. As you can imagine, it has been an overwhelming few days for this sweet boy. We are working on scheduling meet and greets to find the best fit for him. We’ll give another update over the next few days. One of our volunteers shared this heartbreaking video of Hunter today. He could use some help finding a new family!“Ever wonder what a broken heart looks like? Well there you have it. Hunter was surrendered to the shelter yesterday because…ready for it? He didn’t get along with their new puppy. Just when I think the human race couldn’t disappoint me anymore. I found him in the corner of his kennel, too afraid to move. Sometimes I have to stop walking dogs, and sit on the cold floor (the same cold floor these pups sit on) to give them some comfort that’s it’s not as scary as they think. If you’re interested in adopting sweet Hunter, then head to the @houstonhumane and be this guy’s hero. #adoptdontshop #adopthunter #houstonhumanesociety”

And we all know what happens with viral animal videos on social media.

HOPE

You see, in all the hundreds of thousands of views, a lady named Casey came across the video. Right away, she sent it to her brother, Larry Thomas.  Larry and his partner, David Miller, viewed the video and they couldn’t believe their eyes.

You see, the dog in the photo above is Dolly. The couple couldn’t believe it when they saw the similarities between Hunter and Dolly. They said he looked like “the inverse, or like a yin and yang of each other.” The pair of dogs are even around the same age.

The couple visited Hunter the very same day they watched his heartbreaking video. They took Dolly to meet him the day after that. There were hundreds of applicants, though, so they remained hopeful.

Luckily, the pair of dogs hit it off immediately. Hunter had already found himself a new home.

We have exciting news! Our sweet Hunter has found his forever family! Thank you to everyone that took the time to share his story. And thank you especially to Larry, David, and Dolly for opening their hearts and home to Hunter.
