Malissa Sergent Lewis was running a bit late for her job at a local elementary school, so she decided to take a shortcut through a rural Kentucky neighborhood. But when she did, she discovered something bizarre.
A Walking Trash Bag
A trash bag that, as it turns out, impacted her life in a surprising way, The Dodo reports.
“I saw this trash bag in the road, and I thought to myself, ‘did I just see that bag move?’ The closer I got, I realized it was moving,'” she said. “I could hardly wrap my mind around that. Something was alive in that bag, and I just knew I had to get whatever it was out.”
Grabbing her cell phone, Lewis shot footage of the creature walking slowly towards her approaching vehicle.
She was a little nervous, however, because she didn’t know what kind of critter was inside the bag, or if it would be friendly. That didn’t stop her from helping the distressed animal.

“The bag was tied off in a knot, so I carefully tore a corner and looked inside,” she said. “It was a puppy. And he sure was glad to see me. As soon as I opened it up, and he saw light, he just started wagging his tail. He knew he was okay. I couldn’t believe it.”
The beautiful little 8-week-old black and white puppy was still wearing a collar. With no tag, however, so she had no way of knowing where he came from. With that in mind, Lewis and pup drove to work.
“I just put him in my lap and drove to school,” she said. “I couldn’t just leave him in the car, so I brought him in with me. The principal saw me and said ‘You have a dog!’ I said, ‘It’s a long story.'”
Lewis called her son, who drove the little guy to the safety of their home. They took him to the vet to make sure he was okay after suffering such cruelty.
“We got him his shots,” she said. “He seems happy and healthy.”
It isn’t known whether the puppy’s owner put him in the trash bag, or if he was stolen, and the incident has been investigated. While the outcome of the investigation isn’t clear, Lewis is quite certain someone was intending to be cruel, and this little dog likely would have been killed if she hadn’t happened along at the right time.
Here’s the shocking footage below:

“Who could do something like that to any animal? I don’t care who you are; everybody loves puppies,” she said. “It’s a real cold-hearted person to put an animal, any animal in a garbage bag and dump it on the side of the road. They had bad, bad intentions doing that.”
But after posting the video on Facebook, she had a thing or two to say to the creep who did this:
“If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road…you’re a sicko.”
Life for this puppy continues to look up since escaping the confines of the trash bag. And the Lewis family is happy to have a new member.
“He is playful,” Lewis said. “He romps around playing with his new toys. He’s good-natured. Even the day I brought him into the school where I work the day I found him, he was precious. The guidance counselor, Mrs. Kelly, is a big animal lover, she took the pup to visit second grade and the kids loved him.”
And of course, the dog has a rather fitting name: Hefty.
Lewis could have driven right by that trash bag in the road. How wonderful that she didn’t.
Here’s a much happier video from The Dodo.
