Dying Man Wanted Only One Thing, To See His Dog One Final Time

Kevin McClain, like hundreds of thousands of other Americans, was homeless and living in his car. However, Kevin had something that many homeless people don’t — a four-legged best friend named Yurtie AKA Yurt. The pair lived in harmony and took care of each other. Until an ambulance rushed Kevin to the hospital when he fell ill with advanced lung cancer, that is. Unfortunately, Kevin was dying, and there was nothing that Yurtie could do to help.

THE AMBULANCE

According to ambulance worker Jane Erceg, as soon as they transferred Mr. McClain from the ambulance into his room he started talking about his dog. What he couldn’t have known at the time, however, was that Erceg is also a volunteer at the shelter where they took Yurtie.

Kevin remained adamant about seeing Yurtie, too. His one dying wish was to see his precious Yurtie one final time.

THE VISIT

So, the ambulance workers, hospice staff, and employees at the shelter teamed up to make it happen.

No one that was in the room will forget the moment when the two best friends were finally together again.

Ms. Erseg happened to be in the room when Yurtie came through the door. She described what happened to reporters.

“The moment he opened those eyes and he saw that dog, there was instant recognition,” said Erseg. “And with Yurtie, she licked his arms, she licked his face.”

Kevin and Yurtie had a wonderful visit together. Sadly, just a few days after the reunion, Kevin passed away.

WHAT ABOUT YURTIE?

You’re probably wondering what happened to Yurtie since her owner died. Fortunately, this is the happy part of the story. Yurtie found a new forever home almost right away.

Katie and Eric Ungs adopted the sweet girl. They told reporters that adding her to the family was one of the best decisions they ever made.

“She’s full of energy and she brings so much love and joy to the home,” said Katie.

The Ungs know for sure that Yurtie will be loyal to them until the end. One thing is certain, while Yurtie most certainly misses Kevin, she sure does look happy with her new mom and dad.

Fortunately, stories like this are becoming more and more common. Hospitals all over the place have changed rules to allow dogs in to see their owners under certain conditions.
