Heroes come in all shapes and sizes! For these street cats, they needed more than just an ordinary person. Often dressing in a Superhero costumes a special someone comes and visits these cats.
This special person is a young boy in Baltimore has made it his mission to help stray cats in the area. , Kris Papiernik and Kia Griffin’s 5-year-old nephew, Shon feeds all the stray cats in the area. Papiernik and Griffin have been caring for over 40 feral cats in the Philadelphia area for over a decade. In addition to feeding the cats, they also live trap and catch as many as possible to be spayed and neutered and then returned to the area. Shon often visits on weekends and has been apart of it his whole life.
“We were a little hesitant at first because they’re feral cats, and we thought they’re going to run from a rambunctious 3-year-old,” Papiernik said.
But Shon soon proved himself not only to Papiernik and Griffin but to the cats who have learned to trust him.
Papiernik explains, “They just gravitated to him. He’d scratch their bellies and scratch their heads. It was amazing to see these cats who wouldn’t even allow us to touch them but immediately took to him. He must have this magical effect that the cats can pick up.”
They’ve named the different colonies the Kolony Kats, Backyard Boys, Stray Kitty Crew, Meow Squad, Gas Station Kitties and Indoor Kitties.
Papiernik explains that one of the Kolony cats named Bug was feral and too hard to catch. “We couldn’t get Bug neutered or anything because he wouldn’t come to us, and he wouldn’t come near the trap. When Shon came around and started feeding him, Bug came immediately to him. Ever since then, Bug has been a friendly cat.”
Shon appropriately dresses for this hero of a job as a superhero. Papiernik explains, “He said it makes him feel like a superhero for animals.”
