Fighting ring animals rescued, 9 pitbulls and 550 roosters saved

Humans are capable of some of the cruelest forms of torture to animals. Likewise, dogfighting is one of the most inhumane situations to put innocent animals in. Animals are forced to fight for their lives for entertainment purposes for individuals who find pleasure in watching animals suffer.

“Animal fighting is one of the most heinous forms of animal cruelty, and sadly it is far more common in the United States than many people realize,” declared Jessica Rushin, senior manager of Partnerships for The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Field Investigations and Response.

ASPCA Rescued 600 Animals

ASPCA responded to tips that were given about dogfighting. The Indiana Gaming Commission was given a tip involving animals fighting.  Pitbulls and roosters were both being used in illegal fights. Consequently, the ASPCA assisted in rescuing 600 animals including 9 pit bulls and 550 roosters.

“We found dogs chained outdoors in the mud—some with scars consistent with dogfighting—as well as birds, caged and tethered,” ASPCA posted on Facebook.  ASPCA said that what they saw was consistent with what goes on at dog fighting arenas.  The dogs had large and heavy chains. In addition, they were “housed in a manner consistent with dogfighting.”

Dog-fighting Punishment May Include Prison Time and Fines

“To betray animals by forcing them to fight for their lives for so-called entertainment is despicable. We’re proud to work alongside the Indiana Gaming Commission to remove these dogs and birds from pain and suffering and hold those involved responsible,” said Rushin.  A $10,000 fine and up to 2 1/2 years in prison can be given to anyone in Indiana who is conducting an animal fight. This penalty includes those in possession of animals used for fighting.

Superintendent Rob Townsend of Indiana Gaming Commission weighed on the issue. He said, “There’s no place in Indiana communities for animal fighting and the illegal gambling that goes with it.” He went on to say, “We are very pleased that we were able to shut down this operation.”

If you know of anyone involved with animal fighting, contact the authorities immediately. In conclusion, let’s put an end to this type of animal abuse. Because together we can make a difference.
