When you think of a shark, do you think of an animal far removed from anything similar to your own pet? Or could, in fact, a shark from the deep blue seas have a lot in common with your own dog? Let’s take a look at what a group of scientists witnessed in the ocean waters near British Columbia.
The scientists noticed that a salmon shark was swimming next to their boat. So they watched him for a bit. That’s when they discovered that he was swimming back and forth next to a log covered in barnacles.
Upon Closer Observation, The Scientists Could See That The Shark Was Deliberately Using The Log For His Benefit
Upon closer look, they could see that the shark has parasites on his fin. He was trying to scrape them off by using the log. The behavior was very similar to a dog scratching himself on the floor or a table.
“It’s really interesting that these logs out at sea may be scratching posts for them,” the scientist said.
The episode was caught on film for all to enjoy. Hopefully, people who hold a negative feeling towards sharks will see this playful side of them. Also, maybe people will see that sharks are intelligent. This shark figured out that the log with barnacles could be of service to him.
“We were observing an animal in the wild doing what it naturally does and it didn’t seem to be bothered by us at all,” one scientist said.
