Asha, a Golden Retriever, enjoys spending her days outside while her owners watch from the inside. It is a common occasion for her to roam the yard. But one day she returned from her outdoor adventures with something. It wasn’t a stick, or a leaf, or even a ball, but a baby koala!
Owner Kerry McKinnon was in shock when she saw Joey, the baby koala, holding on for dear life on Asha’s back. She explains to an Australian news source,
“She looked a bit guilty when I came out to see what was going on. Her expression was hilarious.”
Her speculations were that the baby fell from the tree and linked onto Asha because she was the closest thing to a furry animal like her mother.
“He never would have made it through the night”
Joey was extremely lucky to find Asha due to the cold temperatures and predators. McKinnon added,
“Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. It would have died out there if left alone all night.”
When she tried pulling Joey of Asha’s back he would not let go! McKinnon commented,
“I think dogs have that protective instinct. The koala didn’t want to leave Asha’s back. When we took the koala off to wrap it in a blanket, it hissed at me and carried on.”
After having Joey stay at their house for a couple days the family decided to take him to the vet, where they would check him for any diseases. Once he was cleared a koala caretaker took him back into his natural habitat. If it weren’t for Asha, Joey could have possibly been dead by now. But instead, he is going to live the rest of his young life back in the forest.
