Dogs can do the most interesting things that to us humans come across as cute. Golden Retrievers are smart dogs with the ability to be trained to do amazing things such as guide dogs, turning lights out, and opening doors.
This Golden Retriever has trained his humans that when he licks the door to go out that means to open it and let him out. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out who has the upper hand in a scenario like this, the dog or the humans.
The Golden’s owner explains how it all started, “We trained the dog so that when he wants to go out, he goes to the front door and waits.” That’s about where the training stopped and the dog’s individual and natural habit took over. The owner goes on to say that the dog interpreted that this meant to go to the front door and lick it.
“If he’s at the door, but isn’t licking it, he doesn’t need out, he’s just chilling.” His human explains. Things carried on like this in the household as the norm. The norm that is, until they moved to a new house. “He knew he had to go to the front door when he wants out. But in the new house obviously with a door that was completely new to him.”
“Now whenever he needs out, he will go to any random door and start licking it. And I mean any door,” his owner said. The dog has licked the bathroom door, bedroom door, closet door, and even the kitchen cabinet when he wants out. “He understands conceptually what a door is. I don’t know if he thinks my closet or the kitchen cabinets lead to outside. Or if he’s just hoping to find doggy Narnia.
The dog gets let out no matter which door he licks. Perhaps he’s the smarter one and has the owners trained. Or maybe he has a sense of humor. Whatever the case may be, I hope this story made you smile.
