A maintenance worker at an apartment complex in Rock Hill, South Carolina thought it was a day like any other. Until he found a tiny six-week-old puppy covered head-to-toe in blood, that is. The worker, Daryl, did the right thing. He rushed the poor baby right away to the Ebenezer Animal Hospital for treatment.

ANIMAL CRUELTY
The vets at the hospital named the little guy Brody. They sent Brody for an x-ray to try and figure out what had happened to him. What they found horrified everyone in the room.

Sadly, Brody had been shot with a BB gun 18 times. The vets were amazed that none of the pellets hit any of the tiny guy’s vital organs or broke any of his little bones. It’s a good thing too because Brody is far too young to go under anesthesia. As a result of that, the vets couldn’t remove the pellets.
The pellets would have to wait and come out all on their own.

Even though they couldn’t operate on the little guy, his outlook was good. Vets later said that the only reason Brody managed to survive was that he was so young when those boys shot him. His little nervous system had not yet fully developed, which allowed him to survive injuries that would have killed an older dog for sure.
THE INVESTIGATION
The vet hospital called the Rock Hill police right away. Under South Carolina law, cruelty to animals is a felony. Investigators determined that someone abandoned Brody when no one stepped up to claim him. They set out to determine who had shot the poor little guy.

After a thorough investigation, police announced that they arrested two teenage boys, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old for the crime.
Since the 14-year-old was so young at the time, unfortunately, we don’t know what he ended up getting sentenced with for his crimes. However, the older boy, sadly, only got sentenced to two years of probation because it was his first offense.
HUNDREDS OF APPLICANTS
When Brody’s story first broke, as you can imagine, he became quite the celebrity. Safe Paws, the group handling his adoption, said it got hundreds of applications in just 24 hours.
