Often times when a dog arrives at a rescue, the workers don’t know anything about its past. This is especially true of the strays that are brought in. One dog at Detroit Dog Rescue is providing a very small glimpse of his life before being rescued.
“It’s the Only way he’s every slept”
“All he wants at bedtime is a cardboard box,” Kristina Millman-Rinaldi, founder of Detroit Dog Rescue explains. “This cardboard box, or whatever size box we have at the time, is the only way he’ll sleep because it’s the only way he’s ever slept to feel safe.”
The dog’s name is Captain. He was brought into the shelter as a stray after found wandering the streets of Detroit. He was looking for food when found, appeared sick and was wearing a red collar. Those are the only concrete facts that they have about Captain before he arrived at the shelter. He also prefers to sleep in boxes. Even when comfy dog beds are offered, Captain will crawl into a box. Perhaps it’s the only way that he knows or maybe it’s the only way that he feels safe.
The goal is to get Captain into a forever home soon. He’s been at the shelter since November. He has a personality that will make a great companion. Millan-Rinaldi explains that Captain “will do anything for a scoop of peanut butter. He has the best wiggle butt and loves showing off his tricks. Despite all he’s been through, he is super sweet.”
The Detroit Dog Rescue would like Captain to go to a home living in Michigan. They would like to continue to monitor his training. But for now Captain is receiving lots of loving care at the shelter.
“I can’t change their past. I can’t erase all of those memories, but as a team at Detroit Dog Rescue, we can give them a future. We will keep them safe and cater to their needs … even if it means providing them with endless cardboard boxes to feel safe,” Millan-Rinaldi explains.
