As a proud dog owner and a lover of animals, it is always incomprehensible to me when I hear stories like this one. Unlike humans, who can obviously be incredibly cruel, dogs only want to give you all their love. All any dog wants in return is a little tenderness and care.
How in the world can anyone treat these amazing creatures with anything less than total devotion?
Well, as you are about to see, sadly there are still plenty of humans willing to treat animals horribly, no matter how much they want to love.
HORRIBLE
Workers at the Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas say the day Truman and Mandi were dropped off they were heartbroken and appalled.
They first noticed the dogs’ owners dragging them across the parking lot. Workers said that it was obvious the dogs knew what was happening and they were terrified. The dogs didn’t want to go into the building, but the women merely laughed it off as the poor dogs tried to dig in their heels.
According to shelter workers, poor Truman flipped on his back in the parking lot, as if begging his owners not to take him inside. The women just giggled some more and picked him up.
When the women finally dragged the dogs inside, they “practically tossed them away as if they were trash, not worthy of a second thought.”
BAD CONDITION
Truman and Mandi were in really bad shape when they were dropped at the shelter, as well. They both suffered from heartworms and other issues. Mandi had mange over a large portion of her body and a painful eye infection to boot.
“I was really, really angry, and I could feel my blood pressure rise,” said Ann Flores, who snapped some pictures of the women and the dogs. “Why get an animal if you’re not going to keep it and do this to them? It’s not fair.”
Workers at the shelter knew they had to work quickly as the Harris County shelter is a kill shelter, Truman and Mandi only had a couple of days. It would have been horrible for these poor animals to have suffered so much to then be put down, so volunteers got to work straight away.
They took some photos of Mandi and Truman, and someone made the video below.
I die in less than 12 hours
3/28 at 5:45pm- Merle has left the building with Houston Pets Alive! 3/28- We found a foster and a potential rescue for Merle early this morning. They contacted the shelter so Merle wasn’t put down. We still don’t have confirmation the foster is solid yet, so stay tuned and we will update when we know more. Hang in there, Merle! I have less than 12 hours left to live without a miracle. Please don’t leave me here to die like my family did.To save Merle, we need a committed local foster, donations for his vetting, and a rescue to email the shelter before euthanasia at 7am. If you are local and can open your home until Merle finds his forever home, comment below and a volunteer will be in touch. If you cannot foster, please consider donating. 100% goes directly to the rescue that saves him once freedom photos are posted in the comments for everyone to see. If he isn’t saved for ANY reason, your donation is REFUNDED IN FULL! paypal.me/pupitforwardhttp://petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=HRRS.A504997A504997Harris County Animal Shelter612 Canino Rd. IT WORKED
Thankfully, it worked. The video quickly circulated and caught the attention of a couple local animal lovers who were more than willing to help out. What happened, though, as Truman was leaving the shelter is almost as heartbreaking as how he came in.
Kellie Donoghue said that she could hear Truman as she approached the shelter, the poor thing was still terrified.
“First I heard him howling. We tried to get him to walk, but he just pancaked flat on the floor and wouldn’t move,” said Donoghue.
Poor Truman had never been around a human that didn’t mean him harm and didn’t quite know how to take it. Things improved for him very quickly on the ride home, however.
“The whole time in the car, he just wanted to be near me,” said Donoghue. “He was starting to warm up to me a bit in a 25-minute car ride, which you don’t often see. Sometimes it takes a really long time for dogs to open up to humans.”
The dogs are now in a foster home until the shelter can locate appropriate forever homes for Truman and Mandi.
If you see someone abusing a dog, please call the authorities. There are strict laws in this country against abusing an animal.
