No matter how many times we bring you stories of neglect and abuse, these tales never fail to shock us to our core. One woman in New Jersey shocked home inspectors and police. When authorities made the horrific discovery and found dozens of dead dogs in her freezer downstairs, she wasn’t sorry. Nor did she apologize for the condition of the other 130 dogs reportedly living in “deplorable and inhumane” conditions.

Actually, 65-year-old Donna Roberts still claims that she did nothing wrong. Read on for the full story.
BURLINGTON COUNTY
Scott Coffina, Burlington Country Prosecutor, said his office obtained a warrant to search Robert’s home. Coffina based the warrant on a new ordinance regarding the housing of animals. And luckily he did because as soon as inspectors entered the house, they started to get dizzy and nauseous.

Upon entering the house, inspectors made one horrific discovery after another. They found 44 dead animals in plastic bags spread throughout several freezers downstairs. Sadly, that was only the beginning.
MALNOURISHED
Unfortunately, the police also found 130 other dogs living in horrible conditions.
“Although the circumstances surrounding the demise of the 44 dogs that were discovered inside plastic bags in freezers remain under investigation, the deplorable and inhumane living conditions the rescued dogs were forced to endure is tragic,” said NJ State Police Col. Patrick Callahan.

Many of the discovered living dogs were in terrible shape. The rescuers had to rush four of them to the hospital for treatment immediately. They were able to treat the remaining animals on the premises.
CHARGED
As a result of everything the inspectors discovered, the police charged Roberts with animal cruelty.
“We are appalled by the horrendous conditions these dogs were subjected to, and as a result, I authorized charges against the property owner, Donna Roberts.”

However, the woman is already out of jail and awaiting her court date.
DENY DENY DENY
Now, remember we said that Roberts continues to deny any wrongdoing whatsoever. She said that all the animals in the freezer were stillborn and she had “forgotten” about them. According to her, she stuck them down there seven years ago and then simply forget they were down there.

You see, unfortunately, Roberts is a breeder. She claims that all breeders store dead animals the way she did so they can be sent away for autopsies. She says that the police are “making a big deal out of nothing.”

Conveniently, of course, Roberts didn’t say a word about the 130 starving and dying dogs they found on her property. She says that she will fight the charges.
This story highlights several things we talk about often here at Animals Being Cute. First, please check them out thoroughly before you adopt a dog from any breeder. Make sure they aren’t running a puppy mill. Secondly, call and report suspicious behavior to the police, they care about animals more than you might think. Here’s hoping they prosecute Roberts to the fullest extent of the law.
Share this story with your friends to spread awareness to these issues and thank the police for doing the right thing.
