Minnesota Offers Money To Those Who Have ’Bee-Friendly’ Gardens

Bees are detrimental to our food supply. They pollinate plants that produce the vegetables that we eat. And if you eat meat too, well bees also pollinate the plants that animals eat. Without bees, humankind will be in trouble. It is for that reason that Minnesota is offering a monetary incentive for homeowners that make their gardens bee-friendly.

Minnesota is doing something positive to help their low bee population grow. The state program that is now in place is called Lawns to Legumes. There is now a million dollars in this program set aside to pay homeowners who grow bee-friendly lawns.

The focus is on building the rusty patched bumblebee population

The goal of the program is to attract all bees. But the program is focused on helping the population of Rusty Patched Bumblebees because the population has decreased by 87% since the 1990s. The bee population has declined due to climate change, pesticides, habitat loss, and diseases. Domesticated honey bees carry much of the diseases that are hurting the Rusty Patched Bumblebees.

The program will cover up to 76% towards the costs of converting your lawn.  Or it will cover up to 90% in places where the rusty patched bees are more likely to thrive.

Minnesota is paving the way towards building a better world-wide bee population. Hopefully, other states may adopt similar programs.

The declining bee population is a serious issue that needs to be addressed right away. What do you think of Minnesota’s monetary bee-friendly lawn incentive program? Would you like to see other states adopt a similar program? We’d like to hear your comments on this topic.

Make sure to share this with a friend who is concerned with the environment. Minnesota’s program may just help push other states to adopt a bee-friendly lawn program too.
