Baltimore Ravens player Ronnie Stanley has been a supporter of his local dog shelters for years. He has adopted a dog named Rico from BARCS Animal Shelter. In August 2017, Stanley participated in a fundraising campaign at BARCS. He matched donations up to $5,000.
Stanley asked to see the dogs that were not getting adopted
This time he went into BARCS Animal Shelter, to adopt a dog into his forever family. But he didn’t just want to peruse the kennels to look for the best looking, young and healthy dog. Instead he asked to see the most least adoptable dogs there. Shelter staff were excited to hear his request. Many dogs have been there for a very long time. Furthermore, old dogs, dogs with health issues, and dogs that may not look as cute as others just don’t get adopted easily.
The shelter staff escorted Stanley to see Winter. Stanley chose to adopt Winter on the spot. The shelter described what took place on this following post on Facebook:
“Beautiful Winter is a dog who has spent most of her six years of life falling into sad, unfortunate situations. She was found on a vacant property, on a hot day with no electricity, or open windows. She was dehydrated and extremely frightened. Winter has a long, hanging belly, most likely a result of over breeding–something we see far too often at our shelter. Due to her age, her belly is not something that will ever tighten up. Female dogs with such characteristics are often passed by in our shelter–but not by Ronnie!
The BARCS Animal Shelter Post goes on to say:
“Ronnie’s thoughts on Winter’s belly, as recalled by our volunteers: ‘Well, that’s just what happens when you’ve had babies.’ He was much more interested in getting lots of face kisses from Winter and falling in love, rather than being worried about the appearance of her tummy. What a great guy!”
Winter now named Lola Has A New Beginning
Winter has now been renamed, Lola. Not surprisingly, she has been enjoying her new life as Stanley’s dog. From the look of the photos, Lola is not wasting one minute on making up for lost time.
Because of Lola’s looks, this wonderful dog was being overlooked. This is such an encouraging example of what can happen when a person like Stanley opens up his heart and home to a dog overlooked for way too long.
