One signature away, New York is about to be the first to ban cat declawing

New York is close to making history by being the first state to ban the declawing of cats. People sometimes have this done for the owner’s benefit, not for the health of a cat.

Bill A01303 has been passed on Tuesday. It will now head to Governor Andrew Cuomo for his signature. In the bill, it is written that if a veterinarian performs a cat declawing operation, he or she will be fined $1,000. Declawing would only be permitted in case of injury or infection to the cat’s paws.

Taking a cats’ claws off is very unhealthy, painful and inhumane for cats.  Cats use their claws for scratching and climbing. The claw of a cat is a marvelous creation because a cat can retract its claws and also use them when needed. “Cats scratch to remove the dead husks from their claws, mark territory, and stretch their muscles,” a statement from the Humane Society of the United States stated. “If performed on a human being, it would be like cutting off each finger at the last knuckle,” The Humane Society also stated.

The Declawing Procedure Is A Barbaric Amputation Procedure

Removing a cat’s claws are considered barbaric by animal activists.  Many people who love animals have been pushing for this bill since 2015. During a declawing procedure, nails are removed that are attached to the bone. This means that declawing involved amputation of the last bone on each toe. To purposely amputate a digit from an animal is absolutely cruel and unnecessary.

Many other countries have already banned the declawing of cats. Linda Rosenthal is the sponsor of this bill. She said,  “Now that New York is poised to become the first state in the nation to ban cat declawing, the days when this procedure is cavalierly offered for the convenience of the owners to protect couches and curtain are numbered.”

Rosenthal tweeted the following statement on Twitter, “Kitty is paw-sitively overjoyed that my bill to ban cat #declaw passed the Assembly and Senate! 😻 Cat #declaw is not like a mani/pedi💅; it’s a cruel, unnecessary amputation that results in the removal of most of the first bone, the tendons & muscles. Let’s end this, NY!”

Let’s hope that this bill gets passed and that declawing is ended in even more states soon.
