Early this year a cow refused to get into a lorry that would take it to be killed. Instead, the cow decided to ram a metal fence before making a mad dash for the nearby lake. A runaway cow is a sight to behold. Especially if you’re ever lucky enough to see one jump into a lake and swim for freedom.
Runaway cow finds shelter on an island.
The bovine dashed into Lake Nysa, in south Poland where it eluded capture from its owner, Mr. Lukasz. Unfortunately, the cow broke a workers arm while attempting to capture it. The cow was determined to have its freedom no matter the cost, according to Polish news show Wiadomosci.
Firefighters even tried to capture the cow. Unfortunately, after attempting to get close enough, the cow swam 50 meters away. Pawel Gotowski, deputy commander of the fire brigade in Nysa, said “the animal is frightened but healthy.”

Mr. Lukasz mentioned that he saw the cow dive underwater on its way to the island. After a week of trying – and failing – he gave up trying to recapture it. Lukasz called in a vet to tranquilize it. When the vet mentioned he was out of tranquilizers, the farmer gave up. Mr. Lukasz did make sure that the cow was being fed.
Political leader fights for cow’s freedom
On a good note, once the farmer stopped trying to have the cow shot dead, the story gained media attention. A political leader in the town of Nysa, Czeslaw Bilobran, reportedly said the cow will live out its life in peace. Pawel Kukiz, a politician and former singer, made a Facebook post in which he offered to pay for the “hero cow” to have its freedom.

The post, translated, says the following;
“She escaped heroically and infiltrated the island in the middle of the lake, where it remains today,” Mr Kukiz said, according to Polish news magazine Wprost. “She did not succumb to firefighters who wanted to transport her by boat and she was still on the battlefield.
“I am not a vegetarian, but fortitude and the will to fight for this cow’s life is invaluable. Therefore, I decided to do everything to cause the cow to be delivered to a safe place and in the second stage, as a reward for her attitude, give her a guarantee of a long-term retirement and natural death.”
It makes a person wonder what would have if animals actually revolted against humans. Here’s a quick video of this “hero cow” and its escape from the slaughterhouse.
Runaway cow update
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the “hero cow” had died after being recaptured. During transport, she died before she got there. Reports say it was due to “former stress.”
