The Troy Police Department in Michigan had a plan. Officers there wanted to talk their chief into allowing them to have a cat. Now, thanks to a brilliant idea, they are interviewing kitties that are interested in the job, and the results are utterly adorable.
MAKING THE CUT
You see, officers at the Troy Police Department approached their chief with an idea in March. He agreed to allow them to get a cat to hang out at the station if they managed to get 10,000 followers on the department’s Twitter account by April.
So, officers went right to work.
To everyone’s surprise, just over a week later the department reached its goal of 10,000 followers, so a cop kitty cat was on the way. Now all that is left is to find the perfect cat.
Of course, we are talking about the police here, so kitties who enjoy the occasional catnip need not apply.
Besides not using drugs, the qualified kitty should also have a few other traits, as well.
“Friendly and works well with the public just like officers,” said Troy Police Sgt. Megan Lehman. “There’s a bunch of other skills we think cats have that are law enforcement skills too, like being able to watch people, being alert.”
With the help of the Michigan Humane Society, the officers went right to work doing interviews. They brought in five kittens and a one-year-old to start, and things got intense. Intensely adorable, that is.
The plan is to have the cat spend days at the station and sleep at home with one of the officers at night. To qualify for the job, the kitties couldn’t be camera shy and must love to be around people.
Well, once the interviews, which you can view below, were conducted, the officers found a match. The Detroit Free Press announced that officers chose the lucky cat last week. All that is left now is to select a name.
Sgt. Lehman said the whole idea behind getting a cat for the station was to help promote adoptions from local shelters. The department is going to hold a contest and allow school children in the area to help select the name of the new station cat.
Welcome aboard, new kitty, good luck in your post.
