This Animal's Fur Was So Matted And Overgrown They Couldn't Tell What It Was Until They Shaved It

Unfortunately, it is not all that unusual at the Douglas County Animal Care and Services in Gardnerville, Nevada, for people to drop their pets off overnight. Sadly, that’s common at every shelter across this nation. However, no matter how often it happens, there are still certain moments that shelter workers will never forget. This is one of those moments. When the employees first saw this poor creature, they didn’t even know what it was.

EARLY MORNING SURPRISE

When shelter supervisor Liz Begovich arrived at work that morning, she was greeted with an animal carrier outside. Inside that carrier was an unidentifiable ball of knotted up fur.

“All we saw was a matted mess,” Liz said.

Everyone wondered what in the world the animal could be. At first, the staff figured that it must be a dog because cats rarely allow themselves to become so horribly disheveled. So, at that point, they decided to get the poor creature out of the crate and see what it was.

“We couldn’t turn him around because of the way he was shoved in the carrier,” said Liz. “So we took the top off and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s a cat!’ I’ve never seen a cat in that sort of condition.”

The poor baby was literally a prisoner of his own fur.

Shelter workers rushed the cat to the vet to see what they could do for the poor matted kitty cat.

A HAIRCUT

The vet sedated the kitty and got to work.

“They shaved about 4.5 pounds of hair off of him,” said Liz. It filled a full-size kitchen bag.”

The workers at the shelter named the knotted up kitty Bob Marley, of course. The one additional thing they found wrong with Bob was that he was extremely overweight. It’s like he was just shoved into his crate and fed there with very little freedom to move around.

HELP

It is difficult to imagine the amount of neglect Bob suffered to end up in such an extreme condition.  The closed-circuit cameras at the shelter captured the man that dropped him off, and the police need your help.

I want to be clear, at this time it is unknown whether this man was the one that neglected the cat. There is a chance, albeit a small one, that he is a Good Samaritan and he was simply trying to save the cat. Either way, it is incredibly important to find the man.

“We would really like to know the backstory,” said Liz. “There could be other animals in this house, wherever this cat came from, who are in the same condition.”

A HAPPY ENDING

As bad as things were when he was dropped at the shelter, Bob’s recovery was swift. As soon as he was free of all that hair, his sparkling personality started to show. Check him out after his haircut.

As soon as he loses that extra weight, his condition will be nearly perfect. Luckily, his new family realized that too. Yes, Bob already found his forever home. His story has a happy ending and his new family is delighted to have him around. He is free of his shackles and we couldn’t be happier for Bob.

It won’t take long with the internet to solve the mystery of how he got that way, either, I’m sure.

Congratulations on your new family, Bob!
