At the Hospital Agudo medical facility in Brazil, staffers apply their medical expertise to the aid of patients suffering from injuries and diseases. However, a special type of treatment is needed. It was to mend two dogs’ broken hearts.

Last month, a local man had been transferred to the hospital. Workers noticed something unusual happening outside the main entrance. Two dogs, for whatever reason, had chosen a space near the entrance as their new hangout. No matter what workers did, the pair refused to leave.

Over the next two weeks, the pair remained, spending their days and nights camped out front. As it turns out, they were there for a purpose. Staff learned that one of the dogs belonged to a patient at the hospital. Her name is Princess. The other dog, named Scooby, was a friend to Princess. Scooby was keeping her company while she waited for her owner’s return.
Veterinarian Maria Alice Altermann first learned about Princess and Scooby from a nurse at the hospital. She and a colleague were asked to bring the dogs in for a checkup.

A Sick Man Gets The Love He Needed
Doctors at the hospital decided that Princess and Scooby were allowed to see the patient they had been waiting for. In preparation, Princess and Scooby were groomed. Finally, they were carried through the corridors of the hospital and the long-awaited moment happened.

For privacy reasons the patient’s identity and condition haven’t been disclosed.

“We took the carriers into the room and released the dogs,” Altermann said. “The man began to breathe excitedly. The dogs climbed on the bed, and we put his hand on Princess. And there she laid and stayed.”

The visit helped to lift the spirits of both the man and the pups.
“We are honored to be able to contribute to this important and special meeting,” Altermann later wrote. “It will surely be reflected in the patient’s recovery and will soothe the distressed heart of the dogs who were missing him so much.”

A Touching Moment For a Man in Need
Workers at the hospital are taking care of Princess and Scooby. With any luck, this special visit will speed up the recovery process.
“All of us on the staff of the Agudo Hospital Association are rooting for the recovery of our patient and that he returns home soon,” the facility wrote, “so that Princess and her friend can alleviate their longing.”
