Dogs love to play. Sometimes it feels like they would chase a ball forever. No matter when or where.
Caterina Dellabona was confused when she first walked by a front yard gate with an unusual sign. It read, “Please don’t throw the toy in the cacti (the dog will hurt itself). Throw either left or right. Thanks.” Then she looked down, and it all made sense.
A playful border collie stuck his head out through the gate and offered Caterina a toy. “It was wide enough for his head to fit comfortably but not enough for his body to go through so it was safe,” Caterina said. She accepted the dog’s invitation to play. Then being careful not to throw the toy in the cacti she threw the toy. Immediately the dog retrieved the toy to her. The game went on for at least 10 minutes. Then Caterina went on her way. The dog seemed sad to see her go.
A Friendship is Born
This wasn’t the end of their relationship. Since that first meeting, Caterina and the dog have become fast friends. She stops every time she passes his house. The dog is always happy to see her. Unfortunately, Caterina doesn’t stay as long as the dog would like her too. Caterina explains, “I’d play with him every time I walked past him, but I would always stop the playing first, not him.
“I don’t think he’d ever stop!”
What a special dog, so eager to play with a complete stranger. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we all were like this little dog? It makes me wonder how many people walk by and play with this sweet dog. How many people accepted his invitation to play, and took a few minutes out of their busy schedules to smile and enjoy life?
This really shows how a simple gesture can change someone’s day. Maybe we can all learn something from this playful and smart dog. Would you stop and play?
