How would you feel if you brought home a pet thinking it was a puppy, only to find as he or she grew, this puppy was of a different species? That’s what one woman in Asia experienced as she watched her so-called “puppy” grow. Wang, a woman in China was about to experience the surprise of her life.
At 3 months of age, Wang knew something wasn’t right. “The fur got thicker when it reached three months old. Its face became pointy and its tail grew longer than that of a normal dog. Other pet dogs seemed to be scared by my pet, so I walked it on a leash,” Wang said.
She took her pet to a local zoo to help identify the species. The zoo staff told her that she may have thought she bought a puppy, but that she had a pet fox. In addition to the looks of fox, another noticeable trait was its scent. It also never barked the way that a dog barks.
Wang had a decision to make. She decided to give her pet up to the zoo, where it would receive the kind of care that a fox deserves. One thing that the fox will receive is a proper diet. Wang noticed that her fox had stopped eating the dog food and raw chicken that she was providing for him.
The selling of wild animals as pets is a common practice in China. Sadly, people often don’t know what they have until the animal grows up. Thankfully, this story has a happy ending for this fox. He will now get to be with other foxes in a zoo fox habitat. He will also get a proper diet. If he shows any sign of an illness, a zoo veterinarian will take care of him. Wild animals deserve to stay wild. For this fox, he got the next best thing and that is a home at the zoo in a fox habitat.
